Its historical influence is enormous, but its claims should be separated from the evidence standards of contemporary psychology. Read it to understand an influential theory and the intellectual world that produced it.

Totem and Taboo is most interesting when read with enough distance to separate its intellectual ambition from claims that modern anthropology or psychology may reject.
Freud applies psychoanalytic ideas to anthropology, religion, taboo and social life. Some of its historical arguments have not held up to modern anthropology, but the work is important for seeing how broadly psychoanalytic explanation was once extended.

Some psychoanalytic concepts remain influential in history and clinical theory, but many of Freud’s specific scientific claims are disputed or unsupported by contemporary psychology. Read these books as historical theories rather than settled science.
The Interpretation of Dreams is the major work, while Dream Psychology is a more compact entry.
The Analysis of Mind is a work in philosophy of mind, but it directly investigates belief, sensation and mental phenomena. It broadens the reader’s idea of what “the mind” can mean.
